Prepare Your Children for Walking Back to School |
Monday | August 17, 2009 Although Bismarck Public Schools don’t open until August 27th, if you have children, especially young children, who will be walking to school this year it’s not too early to start preparing them now.
1. Plan the route your child will walk to school. Consider a route where there is a sidewalk for children so they aren’t in the street, amount of traffic, and safe places to cross. The safer places to cross streets would be where there are crossing guards, traffic signals or stop signs. The least desirable place to cross is at uncontrolled intersections.
2. Allowing children to learn pedestrian safety by trial and error is risky business. Teach your children how to cross the street, and how to look and listen for vehicles. Teach them to cross only at intersections, look all ways before stepping off curbs, stay in crosswalks, don’t step out between parked cars and watch for turning vehicles.
3. In bad weather and darkness, dress your children in something white, bright or reflectorized.
4. Parents should walk the route with their children, both before school starts, and then with them for the first few days of school, pointing out possible traffic hazards, and to establish safe walking practices.
5. Teach your children to avoid playing games, exploring and talking to strangers. Children should go straight to school and straight home.

Construction to Begin-Memorial to Fallen Soldiers |
Wednesday | July 08, 2009 Construction to Begin-Memorial to Fallen Soldiers The North Dakota Memorial to the Fallen in the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) has received sufficient donations to cover building costs and will soon begin construction.
The memorial is a joint venture between the city of Bismarck and the North Dakota National Guard and will be built outside of the North Dakota National Guard main entrance at Fraine Barracks. This memorial, open to the public, will offer a place for Families, friends and the community to reflect on the lives of our fallen heroes.
"The Fallen Soldiers Memorial provides a very important and long lasting tribute to those North Dakotans that have given the ultimate sacrifice so that we may enjoy the freedoms we all cherish," said Mayor John Warford.
The memorial is dedicated to the North Dakota service members who sacrificed their lives in the cause of freedom from terror following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on our Nation.
“We are extremely appreciative to all of the citizens and businesses that have contributed to this great endeavor to honor our fallen heroes,” said Maj.Gen. David Sprynczynatyk, adjutant general for the North Dakota National Guard. “The community members who kindly donated at the 4th of July celebration at the State Capitol helped put us just over our fundraising goal of $50,000.” We appreciate the efforts of the Bismarck Mandan Symphony in leading this effort.”
